ADULT

American Red Cross - Opportunities to volunteer as fire responders, health and safety instructors in disaster services; Armed Forces Emergency Services communication volunteers, Bloodmobile volunteers and as Chapter Support volunteers who will share their areas of expertise and talents with the Red Cross. Bickford Cottage Retirement Center - Volunteer help would be welcome to read newspapers to residents, play the piano or organ, play card/board games, general companionship or conduct other activities. For more information, contact Donnell Hulse at 384-3800.

Central Nebraska Humane Society – Volunteer opportunities include adoption counseling, customer service, reception, animal control dispatch, claims and surrenders, dog walking, kennel assistant, cat massage, pet grooming, foster care, dog training, animal transfer driver, office support, computer data entry, fundraising and lawn care. Girls & Boys Town Shelter - Spend one-on-one time with youth building relationships, teaching social skills and assisting with treatment areas.  Four hours a week with at-risk youth.  Prefer adults 20 years and older.  Contact 38l-4444 for more information.

Girl Scouts Goldenrod Council Inc. - Become a Board Member, 6 meetings annually (specific election and term of office); (On-going) Trainer to teach topics - First Aid, CPR, leadership, behavior and outdoor skills. (Summer/Fall) Challenge Course Facilitator to supervise girls and adults using high and low courses.  (September—May) Leaders to work with girls K-12.  (August - April) Service team to work with adults planning events, be treasurer, secretary or service unit manager.  Call 382-2020.

Grand Island Veterans Home - (On-going) Volunteer escorts for wheelchair bound individuals, one-on-one visits, volunteer opportunities and schedules have flexible hours available. Full training and orientation is provided to all volunteers. Contact Joanne Badura at 385-6252 ext. 452.

Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska – Opportunities available in the Behavioral Health Program. Volunteers are needed in the day services programs with arts and crafts, educational groups and with socials. Please contact Becky at (308) 384-7896 at ext. l60. Assistance is also needed in the retail operations at our Grand Island Store - contact Jeanie Nouzovsky, store manager at (308) 384-7010 for volunteer opportunities. Heartland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) - Advocates to speak for children in court (On-going) Training is required.  Contact Diann Muhlbach at 385-5l25.

Hope Harbor - (On-going) Pick up donations of furniture, household goods, etc. to be given to families that are moving into self-sufficient housing.  Donation assistant needed to help sort/organize donations. Office volunteer to sort, copy, file and answer telephone, record donations, etc.  Afternoons.  Contact Sadie at 385-5190.

Lakeview Health & Rehab - Help with birthday parties and socials, One-on-one visits with residents, reading, helping with bingo, process newsletter. Contact Recreation Department at 382-6387.

Parish Thrift Store – People needed Park Place Nursing Home- One on one visits, program assistance. Flexible scheduling for volunteer opportunities, contact Becky Freelend at 382-2635.

Riverside Lodge Retirement Community – People needed to read newspapers, pop popcorn, assist with jigsaw puzzles, general companionship and a variety of other activities.  Call Cathy Roark (382-l657) for additional information.

Salvation Army - Volunteer opportunities available in food pantry, hot meal program, thrift store, emergency shelter, disaster services bell ringing and youth group. For more information, call Amy at 382-4855.

Senior Companion Volunteer Program - Social activities with seniors confined to their homes.  Writing letters, reading, visiting, grocery shopping, socializing, help with activities in the adult day care. Prefer volunteer to be 60 years or older.  Volunteers needed for handi-man services to help in cleaning their home, lawn mowing and snow removal. Call Norma at 385-5308.

St. Francis Medical Center – We are seeking individuals who want to volunteer in the special, unique, “Visiting Ours” gift shop, as a cashier and assist our customers. Shifts currently available are 5-8 p.m., weekends from 11-2 and 2-5, and substitutes are needed during the daytime week hours. Refreshment cart volunteers are needed to deliver afternoon refreshments to our patients. Currently, weekend volunteers are needed from 1:30 –3:00 p.m. and substitutes during the week. Adults interested in these volunteer positions may call 308-398-5564. There is a need for a volunteer on occasional Wednesday’s to assist staff with serving lunch to Joint Camp patients.

Stuhr Museum – Let your HOBBIES and TALENTS be ENJOYED by THOUSANDS. The Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer is seeking a wide range of volunteers with projects for practically everyone. If you like working with the public we need friendly people for: Greeting visitors, Historical Interpretation, Docents and Tour Guides, Special Events (Civil War, evening in the Country, Holiday Celebrations, etc.), Silver Coronet Band. If you prefer more behind the scenes, we need assistance with, Clerical and Data Entry, gardening and grounds work, research and restoration, sewing projects and much more. Our volunteers can receive gift shop discounts, museum memberships and new friends. Tabitha Health Care - Become a special care giver by becoming a part of a professional team by volunteering as a Hospice helper. Volunteers to provide services in respite care, bereavement support, transportation (must have valid drivers license/proof of auto insurance) light housekeeping and may also prepare light meals and provide companionship. Tiffany Square - Need volunteer help for “Bingo Time” and games. Help write letters for residents and visitation with residents appreciated. Contact activity director at 384-2333 for volunteer opportunities. 

FOOD SERVICE 

Central NE Community Services – Sorting and boxing commodities.  Contact Jayne Waite at 385-5500 for specific date and times.

Senior Companion Volunteer Program – Need volunteers to deliver Meals On Wheels, Monday thru Friday to homebound older adults. Contact Lois Steinike at 385-5308. YWCA – Need help serving breakfast from 7:30 to 9:00 am, lunch l0:30 to 12:30 pm. Child care assistance (need to be l6 years of age) and maintenance help needed.  Contact Lee Lillibridge at 384-9922.

 GARDENING 

Grand Island Veterans Home - (Spring-Fall) Assistance with personal gardens.  Volunteer opportunities and schedules have flexible hours available. Full training and orientation is provided to all volunteers. Contact Joanne Badura at 385-6252 ext. 452.

Park Place – (Spring-Fall)) Assistance with garden projects.  Flexible scheduling for volunteer opportunities. .  Contact Becky Freelend 382-2635.

 INSTRUCTION / EDUCATION / MENTORING 

Adult Basic Education - There is a great need for volunteers to work one-on-one with GED students in either Math or English.  ESL students also need volunteers to teach Basis English skills i.e. the alphabet, numbers, etc.  For more information call (308) 398-7433 or the ABE Classroom (308) 398-7432.

Big Brothers Big Sisters – Mentoring opportunities available for individuals, families or couples. Contact BBBS at 384-3456 for more information.

Head Start Child & Family Development Program – Teachers need assistance in the classroom doing various activities with children in seven classrooms at 310 N Piper, from 8:00-4:30. If interested in volunteering please call Nancy during the day at 385-5115 or 385-5058.

Literacy Council of GI - One-on-one tutoring year around, will train.  Office hours 2:00 to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday. Contact Jane at 385-55l5 for more information

TeamMates - (September - May) Mentor, one hour per week with student at school.  Please contact Nancy at 38l-7767.

MAINTENANCE / CONSTRUCTION 

Habitat For Humanity – (On-going) Construction of homes built in partnership with low-income families. Call for current needs and schedules.  Contact Dana 385-55l0.

Hope Harbor- (On-going) Shelter worker, sort and organize donations, painting, yard projects, small maintenance projects, organize and supervise deep cleaning projects, pick-up donations, stock and rearrange shelter rooms as needed.  Donation Assistant to help sort and organize donations at the shelter.  COMMUNITY OUTREACH 

Crane Meadows - Variety of volunteer opportunities available.  Guides needed for tour groups (training available for those interested in guiding.  Volunteers also needed in the gift shop and for outdoor work.  Contact Karen at 382-1820 or via email at business@cranemeadows.org.  Prefer volunteers ages 16 and older.

Grand Island Veterans Home - (On-going) Community outreach, school appointed and court appointed escorts.  Volunteer schedule is very flexible, full training and orientation is provided to all volunteers. Contact Jeanne Badura at 385-6252 ext. 452.

Habitat for Humanity - Need volunteers with pick-ups who are available weekends or weekdays to pick-up aluminum cans from individuals, businesses and schools.  Contact Dana 385-55l0.

Hope Harbor- (On-going) Design and maintain webpage for CHRC.  Assistance with planning and organizing fundraisers, publicity and community awareness events.  Design informational brochures, flyers for raising awareness and community outreach.  Help in staffing booths at various awareness events.  Speakers to community clubs, churches, organizations etc.  Contact Sadie at 385-5190.

St. Francis Medical Center – The Lifeline program needs individuals to install units in subscribers home. Can be easily trained to hook up this unit to the telephone & instruct the subscriber. Also needed are individuals to test Lifeline units once per month.

Grand Island Veterans Home - (On-going) Decorating for seasons, newsletter assistance, office assistance, and bulletin boards.  Volunteer opportunities and schedules have flexible hours available .Full training and orientation is provided to all volunteers.  Contact Joanne Badura at 385-6252 ext. 452.

Hope Harbor - Office volunteers to assist with clerical duties and reception (afternoons).  Volunteer Coordinator: assist with recruiting and organizing volunteers for shelter work, donation pickup and disbursement, coordinating volunteers for work projects, compile weekly ‘items needed’ list to distribute to churches and other on-going supporters. Park Place Nursing Home - Newsletter assistance, create posters, computer/calendar assistance, volunteer orientation, recruitment, scheduling, deliver mail, write letters, errands, seasonal/holiday decorations, Flexible scheduling of volunteer opportunities . Contact Becky Freelend at 382-2635.

TeamMates – Filing, photocopying and other clerical duties for 2-4 hours a week.  Contact Nancy 381-7767.

Third City Community Clinic - Need office help and volunteer help for clinic.  Contact Susan Aguilar at 398-5312 as times do vary.

RECREATIONAL 

Grand Island Veterans Home - (On-going) Help with parties, fishing escort, one-on-one activities, visits, writing letters, walks, etc.  Volunteer opportunities and schedules have flexible hours available. Contact Joanne Badura at 385-6252 ext. 452.

Park Place Nursing Home – Assist with special events, men’s programming, family programming, crafts, gardening, one on one activities, outings, share hobbies, pets, or other interests.  Flexible scheduling of volunteer opportunities.  Contact Becky Freelend at 382-2635.

Big Brothers Big Sisters - Office volunteers help with monthly youth activities. Contact  Gary at 384-3456.

Community Humanitarian Resources Center - (Every month) Serve on planning committee to help plan and organize 2005 Capital Campaign and fundraising events.  (July/August) Help with ‘Stuff the Bus’- receive donations of school supplies to be distributed to homeless children.  (September/October/November) Celebrity Hosts needed for ‘Your Night In For Their Night Out Event’.  Help with organizing, planning, and publicity for event.  (Dec)Adopt a family: families or agencies that would like to adopt a family that is in shelter at Christmas time.  (May/June/July) Assist with organizing, planning, publicity and recruiting donors, sponsors and teams for annual Glowball Golf Tournament. Crisis Center - (February) Valentine Balloons, fill up and delivery. Deliver flowers for two floral shops. (May) Deliver flowers for Mother’s Day. (June)  Blues Festival, setup, take tickets and work booths.  (July) Art in the Park, help with hands on activities for children; Ethnic Festival, hand out information.  (November) Children’s Day, help with activities for children-November.  (December) Client Gift Give Away, set up room and deliver gifts.  (Anytime) Foster pet care family.   Contact Shellie at 382-8250.

Grand Island Parks and Recreation – People who enjoy working with plants are encouraged to volunteer at the city greenhouse located at l707 W. Oklahoma. Horticulturist Brad Foster will be needing assistance throughout the year for a variety of duties including transplanting, planting seeds and flower beds. Anyone wanting to volunteer should contact Brad at 385-5303.

Grand Island Veterans Home - (On-going) Concerts, dances, parade (Veterans Parade) parties, BBQ’s etc.  Volunteer opportunities and schedules have flexible hours available. Full training and orientation is provided to all volunteers. Contact Joanne Badura at 385-6252 ext 452. 

Heartland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) - (On-going) Fundraising, help in organizing events, publicity, selling tickets and products.  (April) Child Abuse Prevention Month distribution of ribbons.  (November) Children’s Day Activities.  Contact Diann Muhlbach at 385-5125.

Heartland United Way - (May) Golf Tournament, (July - December) Summer fundraiser, campaign, Toys for Tots, and the Giving Tree.  Contact Tanya at 382-2675.

Park Place Nursing Home – Assist with monthly birthday parties, annual hay rack ride, 4th of July events, picnics, Lunch Brunch, community outings, shopping, Develop theme kits, mobiles, sensory kits. Flexible scheduling for volunteers. Contact Becky Freeland at 382-2675.

Project Hunger- Volunteer help welcome in Food Bucks operation, food basket deliveries, office work and special events, which include the Easter Basket Extravaganza and Harvest Festival. Call 385-l590 for additional information or visit the website at www.projecthunger.org.

Hope Harbor - (On-going) Assistance with transporting shelter families and individuals to work, school, classes, job interviews, medical and other appointments.  Contact Sadie at 385-5190.

Senior Companion Volunteer Program – Transportation on handi-bus for all Hall County residents for grocery shopping, doctor’s appointments, ride to work, etc. Contact Lorna at 385-5324 or Barbara Hull at 385-5324.

 YOUTH

 American Red Cross – Volunteer Youth Board for persons ages 13 to 18.  The Youth Board meets monthly to help provide community service and develop leadership skills.

Big Brothers Big Sisters - Office volunteers help with monthly youth activities. Volunteers to mentor children ages 6-l4.   Contact BB/BS for more information.

Hope Harbor - Childcare for parents during in house meetings, parenting classes, case management (Wednesday evenings and as needed).  Contact Sadie at 385-5190.

Girl Scouts Goldenrod Council Inc. - Be part of troop or join individually in Girl Scouts and make friends with girls from K-12th grades.  You could be a Challenge Course Facilitator, a camp counselor and have fun with girls practicing leadership skills. You can plan and design activities for the younger girls to try.  You can participate in events with just girls your age doing high adventure (white rafting, canoeing, etc.) or explore career opportunities and travel. Grand Island Veterans Home -The Grand Island Veterans Home can work with youth who have been assigned to perform community service hours. Please contact Joanne Badura at 385-6252 ext. 452 .
