Gathering Song: There’s a Wideness In God’s Mercy
- There’s a wideness in God’s mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in his justice which is More than liberty. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the head.
- For the love of God is brighter than the measures of our mind, and the heart of the eternal is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple we should take him at his word, and our lives would be thanksgiving for the goodness of our Lord.
- Troubled souls, why will you scatter like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander from a love so true and deep? There is welcome for the sinner and more graces for the good; there is mercy with the Savior, there is healing in his blood.
Greeting
Penitential Act: Confiteor
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;
Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints; and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
-AND/OR-
Lord have Mercy,
Christ have Mercy,
Lord have Mercy
Gloria
Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace on earth, peace to people of good will.
We praise You, we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You, we give You thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand, the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace on earth, peace to people of good will.
~ Amen.
Liturgy of the Word
1st Reading SIR 27:30-28:7
Wrath and anger are hateful things,
yet the sinner hugs them tight.
The vengeful will suffer the LORD’s vengeance,
for he remembers their sins in detail.
Forgive your neighbor’s injustice;
then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.
Could anyone nourish anger against another
and expect healing from the LORD?
Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself,
can he seek pardon for his own sins?
If one who is but flesh cherishes wrath,
who will forgive his sins?
Remember your last days, set enmity aside;
remember death and decay, and cease from sin!
Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor;
remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults.
The Word of the Lord,
~Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm PS 103: 1-2, 3-4, 9-10, 11-12
R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.
Bless the LORD, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.
R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.
He pardons all your iniquities,
heals all your ills.
He redeems your life from destruction,
crowns you with kindness and compassion.
R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.
He will not always chide,
nor does he keep his wrath forever.
Not according to our sins does he deal with us,
nor does he requite us according to our crimes
R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.
As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he put our transgressions from us.
R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.
2nd Reading ROM 14:7-9
Brothers and sisters:
None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself.
For if we live, we live for the Lord,
and if we die, we die for the Lord;
so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.
For this is why Christ died and came to life,
that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
The Word of the Lord,
~Thanks be to God
Alleluia JN 13:34
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I give you a new commandment, says the Lord;
Love one another, as I have loved you.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel MT 18:21-35
Peter approached Jesus and asked him,
“Lord, if my brother sins against me,
how often must I forgive?
As many as seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.
That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king
who decided to settle accounts with his servants.
When he began the accounting,
a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.
Since he had no way of paying it back,
his master ordered him to be sold,
along with his wife, his children, and all his property,
in payment of the debt.
At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’
Moved with compassion the master of that servant
let him go and forgave him the loan.
When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a much smaller amount.
He seized him and started to choke him, demanding,
‘Pay back what you owe.’
Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’
But he refused.
Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison
until he paid back the debt.
Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened,
they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master
and reported the whole affair.
His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant!
I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to.
Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant,
as I had pity on you?’
Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers
until he should pay back the whole debt.
So will my heavenly Father do to you,
unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”
The Gospel of the Lord,
~Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ
Homily
Profession of Faith: I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Communion Song: God of Mercy
Refrain: God of mercy, holy mystery, ever faithful one, you have pitched your tent among us, reconciling love. Heart and mind of Christ, live within our lives, form us into people of mercy and grace.
- You have called us each by name in your great compassion, encompassing all our feelings with mercy. God of mercy, lead us.
- Slow to anger, rich in love, you bestow forgiveness. May we, in turn, forgive those who harm us. God of mercy, lead us.
- In our midst as one who serves, breaking down divisions, to all in need you send us as a neighbor. God of mercy, lead us.
- Reaching out to those in pain, wounded and abandoned, may we create safe haven for healing. God of mercy, lead us.
Spiritual Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things,
and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
Come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
And unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
Concluding Rite
Closing Song: Lift Up Your Hearts
Refrain: Lift up your hearts to the Lord, praise God’s gracious mercy! Sing out your joy to the Lord, whose love is enduring.
- Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Praise the name above all names! Say to God how wondrous your works, how glorious your name!
- Let the Earth worship, singing your praise. Praise the glory of your name! Come and see the deeds of the Lord; bless God’s holy name!
- God’s right hand made a path through the night, split the waters of the sea. All creation, lift up your voice: Our God set us free.
Vocations Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Bless our diocese with the grace of many vocations
to the priesthood, diaconate and to religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother,
grant to those You have called
the willingness and the generosity of spirit
to give of themselves in devoting their lives and their talents
to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese,
and especially the faith of those You are calling.
We ask this through Christ, Your Son our Lord. ~ Amen
