20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Presider: Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt
Gathering Song: Send Us Your Spirit
Send Us Your spirit, O Lord. Evening enfolds us and holds us too near. Wake the morning light. Make our living bright. Shine on our darkness, O Lord.
Hold Us with mercy, O Lord. Sorrow has spoken, has broken our hearts. Clothe us in your care. Be the life we bear. Feed us and fill us, O Lord.
Teach us your wisdom, O Lord. Shadows have clouded, have crowded our sight. Give us hearts that see. Set our loving free. Hear us and help us, O Lord.
Greeting
Penitential Act: Confiteor
I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;
Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints; and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
-AND/OR-
Lord have Mercy,
Christ have Mercy,
Lord have Mercy
Gloria
Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace on earth, peace to people of good will.
We praise You, we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You, we give You thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand, the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
Glory to God, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace on earth, peace to people of good will.
~ Amen.
Liturgy of the Word
1st Reading IS 56:1, 6-7
Thus says the LORD:
Observe what is right, do what is just;
for my salvation is about to come,
my justice, about to be revealed.
The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD,
ministering to him,
loving the name of the LORD,
and becoming his servants--
all who keep the sabbath free from profanation
and hold to my covenant,
them I will bring to my holy mountain
and make joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and sacrifices
will be acceptable on my altar,
for my house shall be called
a house of prayer for all peoples.
The Word of the Lord,
~Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm PS 85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14
R. Oh God, let all the nations praise you!
May God have pity on us and bless us;
may he let his face shine upon us.
So may your way be known upon earth;
among all nations, your salvation.
R. Oh God, let all the nations praise you!
May the nations be glad and exult
because you rule the peoples in equity;
the nations on the earth you guide.
R. Oh God, let all the nations praise you!
May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you!
May God bless us,
and may all the ends of the earth fear him!
R. Oh God, let all the nations praise you!
2nd Reading ROM 11:13-15, 29-32
Brothers and sisters:
I am speaking to you Gentiles.
Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,
I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous
and thus save some of them.
For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world,
what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.
Just as you once disobeyed God
but have now received mercy because of their disobedience,
so they have now disobeyed in order that,
by virtue of the mercy shown to you,
they too may now receive mercy.
For God delivered all to disobedience,
that he might have mercy upon all.
The Word of the Lord,
~Thanks be to God
Alleluia MT 4:23
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom
And cured every disease among the people.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel MT 15:21-28
At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out,
“Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David!
My daughter is tormented by a demon.”
But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her.
Jesus’ disciples came and asked him,
“Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.”
He said in reply,
“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.”
He said in reply,
“It is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs.”
She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps
that fall from the table of their masters.”
Then Jesus said to her in reply,
“O woman, great is your faith!
Let it be done for you as you wish.”
And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.

Communion Song: Spirit and Grace
Spirit and grace, here in this meal; you are the wind that breathes through the field. Gather the wheat and form us in Christ. Come, be our source and breath of life.
Refrain: In the bread, blessed, broken, and shared, Christ is our life, whose presence we bear. Come, O Spirit, make your grace revealed in this holy meal.
Spirit and grace, here in this meal; you are the life that flows through the vine. Gather this drink and form us in Christ. Come, be our source and breath of life.
Refrain
Spirit and grace, here in this place; you are the light that shines in this space. Gather your people and form us in Christ. Come, be the heartbeat of our lives.
Refrain
Spirit of God, sending us forth; we spread your wisdom throughout all the earth. Gather the nations and form us in Christ. Come, be the presence in our lives.
Refrain
Meditation: ‘ Renew’ by Sarah Hart
Spiritual Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things,
and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
Come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
And unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.
Final Blessing
Concluding Rite
Closing Song: A Rightful Place
Refrain: Let us live our lives so that all might see that our hearts are restless till they rest in thee. Let us build your kingdom in truth and grace so that all might know they have a rightful place.
Beauty ever ancient and new, breaking through our deafness so we hear you. Shattering the darkness of night, a new dawn is rising to bring your light to all the world.
Refrain
To gather in your presence we came to be one in spirit, in truth and name; strengthened by the body of Christ, taking up the call now to share your light with all the world.
Refrain
Vocations Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Bless our diocese with the grace of many vocations
to the priesthood, diaconate and to religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother,
grant to those You have called
the willingness and the generosity of spirit
to give of themselves in devoting their lives and their talents
to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese,
and especially the faith of those You are calling.
We ask this through Christ, Your Son our Lord. ~ Amen
